Applications are invited for a PhD project at the Environment Department,
University of York, York (UK), starting in October 2010.

"Scavenging of gases by ash in volcanic eruption plumes"

Volcanic explosive eruptions inject hot mixtures of silicate particles (ash)
and acidic gases, such as sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen
fluoride, into the atmosphere. The interaction between the ash and gas
materials in the eruption plume results in significant scavenging of the
acidic gases. It is fundamental to understand these reactions for two main
reasons: (i) to better estimate the quantities of potentially harmful gases
which can enter, be transported in, and react with the atmosphere during an
explosive volcanic eruption, and (ii) to better assess the potential for ash
to release nutrients and/or toxicants upon deposition of the ash material in
terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The student will conduct experiments in
the lab to simulate gas-ash interaction in volcanic eruption plumes. A range
of surface-sensitive techniques will be used to investigate the reaction
products. It is anticipated that the student will carry out field work to
collect ash samples if a volcanic eruption occurs in the course of the
project. The student will be based in University of York but is also
expected to spend short stays in Nancy, Munich and Leeds where she/he will
work with other collaborators on this project.

Applications should be submitted to the Graduate Schools Office by *** May
31st, 2010 ***. Please include with your application: (i) a full CV and (ii)
a brief covering letter explaining why you are interested in the project and
indicate which project you are applying for as well as the name of the
supervisor (s). Interviews are planned for the second week of June 2010.
Formal applications can be made either through post or online. For more
information on the application procedure check the following University of
York website: http://www.york.ac.uk/graduatestudy/applying/.
