Piton de la Fournaise

After two eruptive phases on Sept 12 to Oct. 2 and November 27 to 28,
Piton de la Fournaise volcano started a third eruptive phase on Dec.
15, 2h45 local time. As for the other eruptions, the active vent is
situated within Dolomieu crater, this time on the northern side,
beneath "La Soufrière" and about 200 m below the crater rim. Until
today, the lava flows covered most of the crater floor with aa and
pahoehoe lava flows. The outflow rate is small, probably less than 2
or 3 m^3/sec. They are completely inaccessible and only very few Pele
hairs could be collected. The SO2 plume was recorded by the miniDOAS
permanent system of the NOVAC program and by mobile miniDOAS in the
field and between 100 and up to 2000 tons of SO2 per day were
measured. Eruption is still going on.
