Candidates are sought for a two-year postdoctoral project on magmatic
processes at Santorini Volcano, Greece. The aim of the project is to
reconstruct the ascent and crystallization history of silicic magma
bodies through a combination of detailed phenocryst stratigraphy
studies (BSE imagery), microanalysis of crystals and melt inclusions
(EPMA, SIMS, FTIR) and high-resolution phase-equilibria
experimentation. The topic forms part of a larger project on Santorini
magmatism already financed by the French ANR funding agency, and
collaborative between the laboratories at Orléans (B. Scaillet),
Clermont (T. Druitt), Nancy (E. Deloule), Saclay (S. Scaillet) and
Barcelona (F. Costa). SEM, EPMA and FTIR techniques are available in
the laboratories at Clermont and Orléans; SIMS at Nancy, diffusion
profile analysis at Barcelona, and 40Ar/39Ar and 14C dating facilities
at Saclay. The experimental facilities at Orléans will be used for
determining phase-equilibria relationships. The successful candidate
will spend half the time in Clermont and half in Orléans. The salary
will be 3600-4110 euros per month prior to tax, depending on post-PhD
experience. The starting date must be no later than 1 April 2009 to
enable field sampling on Santorini in early May. Potential candidates
are requested to send letters of motivation, CVs, accounts of prior
research (including any article pdfs) and the names of two referees to
Bruno Scaillet (bscaille@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) and Tim Druitt
(T.Druitt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
