Positions available at the Earth Observatory of Singapore:

(1) Principal Investigators

Earth Observatory of Singapore

Principal Investigators

The Earth Observatory of Singapore has been established at Nanyang
Technological University to study tectonic, volcanic and climatic
processes, three arenas of earth science with particular relevance to
the future of societies and civilization.

We plan to make about 15 tenure-track appointments over the next few
years. Most will be at the assistant-professor level, but a few will be
more senior.

If being part of a new earth-science research team in tropical Asia
intrigues you, please email your application package (consisting of a
curriculum vitae, list of publications, statement of research and
teaching interest, and the names of 3 references ) to EOS@xxxxxxxxxx by
1st December 2008.

(2) WOVODat Project Leader

Earth Observatory of Singapore

WOVOdat Project Leader

WOVOdat is a web-accessible, historical database of worldwide volcanic
unrest, for reference during volcanic crises and for "epidemiological"
research on volcanic processes. A preliminary database design is
already in pilot testing. The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS)
seeks a geoscientist with substantial experience with instrumental
volcano monitoring to lead further development and population of
WOVOdat, in collaboration with WOVO member observatories.

Initial appointment will be for 2 years; funding is currently available
for 5 years and the project is envisioned to be ongoing. Minimum
qualifications are an MSc (PhD preferred) in a relevant field and a
strong background in monitoring and interpreting geophysical and/or
geochemical unrest at an active volcano. This is a non-faculty,
research staff appointment.

Please visit http://www.ntu.edu.sg/earthobservatory for more
requirements of these positions, and apply online using the instructions
at that site, before November 1, 2008. Please visit www.wovodat.org for
more details about the WOVOdat project.

(3) Senior IT Specialist (Programmer)

Earth Observatory of Singapore

Senior IT specialist (Programmer)

WOVOdat is a web-accessible, historical database of worldwide volcanic
unrest, for reference during volcanic crises and for "epidemiological"
research on volcanic processes. A preliminary database design is
already in pilot testing. The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS)
seeks a senior programmer to complete design of the database, ensure
efficient interfacing with GIS software and other visualization tools,
ensure efficient population of the database from a very heterogeneous
set of source materials, and ensure smooth and efficient Web access for
users. This is a multi-year project. You will be assisted by at least
one junior programmer.

Minimum qualifications are: BSc and preferably higher degree in
Computer Science, CIS, or related field and substantial experience as a
scientific programmer or system analyst; significant experience with
the LINUX/UNIX operating system, server side processes, and
client-server logic; demonstrated experience in programming and
scripting languages such as C++, Java, Python, PHP, PERL, Ajax, XML,
and SQL; experience with GIS and Atlas Information Systems or virtual
globes and their web applications, basic spatial data treatment
(orthorectification, georeferencing, projections, transformations, SVG).
Applicants must be willing to travel. Experience with MySQL is highly
desirable ; cross-cultural skills will be a plus.

Please visit http://www.ntu.edu.sg/earthobservatory for more
requirements of these positions, and apply online using the instructions
at that site, before November 1, 2008. Please visit www.wovodat.org for
more details about the WOVOdat project.

(4) Junior Programmer / Geoscientist

Earth Observatory of Singapore

Junior Programmer / Geoscientist

WOVOdat is a web-accessible, historical database of worldwide volcanic
unrest, for reference during volcanic crises and for "epidemiological"
research on volcanic processes. A preliminary database design is
already in pilot testing. The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS)
seeks a junior programmer/geoscientist who will assist the senior
programmer in all programming and database population tasks.
Preference will be given to applicants with BSc level or higher
qualification in geosciences as well as the necessary programming
skills, to ensure a thorough understanding of the science behind the
data. Hands-on experience with relational databases, geospatial data
analysis, and programming is required. Experience in XML, Java and SQL
is a plus.

Please visit http://www.ntu.edu.sg/earthobservatory for more
requirements of these positions, and apply online using the instructions
at that site, before November 1, 2008. Please visit www.wovodat.org for
