2008 - Short Course on Fluids in the Earth

Presented by

R. J. Bodnar - Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, U.S.A.
J. Webster - (American Museum Natural History, N.Y., USA)

With additional Seminars by:

B. De Vivo and A. Lima - (Univ. di Napoli Federico II, Italy)

The Course will be held on October 20-24th, 2008 at:

Università di Napoli Federico II

Programme

Monday - October 20th, 2008

The Geohydrologic Cycle (Bodnar; 2 hours)
The whole Earth system can be divided into the following reservoirs for H2O:
atmosphere, biosphere, oceans, surface water, groundwater, glaciers and
polar ice, continental crust, oceanic crust, upper mantle, transition zone,
lower mantle and core. The amount of H2O contained in each of these
reservoirs will be discussed, as well as the fluxes of H2O between
reservoirs and residence times for H2O in the different reservoirs.

Introduction to fluid inclusions and fluid phase equilibria (Bodnar; 5
hours)
Identification, analysis and application of fluid inclusions to geologic
problems.

Tuesday – October 21th, 2008

The role of fluids and structural and tectonic processes (Bodnar; 2 hours)
Fluids play an important role in the structural and tectonic processes by
reducing the strength or rocks and minerals. In turn, both large and
small-scale structures control fluid flow in the Earth's crust. Several
examples of the role of fluids in crustal deformation will be discussed.

Fluids in sedimentary basins, including Mississippi Valley-type deposits
(Bodnar; 2 hours)
As sediments are deposited and compacted during basin evolution, fluids of
varying composition are generated and expelled from sediments during
diagenesis. The compositions of fluids in sedimentary basins and origin of
basinal brines will be discussed.

Metamorphic and Mantle Fluids (Bodnar; 2 hours)

Introduction to melt inclusions (Webster; 2 hours)

Wednesday – October 22nd, 2008

Physics and Thermodynamics of Melt-Volatile Systems (Webster; 6 hours)
Over the past several years much progress has been made in understanding the
evolution of volatile-rich magmatic systems associated with active
volcanoes. This module will provide an overview of the "Burnham Model" for
crystallization of hydrous magmas.

Application of fluid and melt inclusions at Vesuvius (De Vivo; 1 hours)

Thursday - October 23rd, 2008

Fluids in magmatic – hydrothermal ore deposits (Bodnar; 3 hours)
Fluids in magmatic – hydrothermal systems transport and deposit metals to
generate economic mineral deposits. Our current understanding of the role of
fluids in the ore forming process will be summarized.

Applications of melt and fluid inclusions in volcanology and igneous
petrogenesis (Webster; 3 hours)

Application of fluid and melt inclusions at Campi Flegrei (De Vivo; 1 hours)

Friday - October 24th, 2008

Exam on material covered in the short course (2 hours)
