Institut national de la recherche scientifique (IRNS,
www.ete.inrs.ca), a university focusing on scientific research and
graduate study programs in Quebec City, Canada, is currently
recruiting a PhD student for the research project "Eruptive processes
of maar-diatreme volcanoes".

The PhD project will combine studies of two exceptional sites:

1. This Fall, an international team
(Canada-Germany-USA-Switzerland-Sweden-Argentina) will drill a
Quaternary maar in southern Patagonia (Argentina;
http://www.icdp-online.org/contenido/icdp/front_content.php?idcat=722).
The volcanic crater is now occupied by a lake, the bottom of which
includes ~400 m of sediments. The main aim of the drilling program is
to core these sediments to reconstruct the southern hemisphere climate
over the last 400-700 ka; but under the sediments the volcaniclastic
deposits will also be drilled. Further, an inclined hole will
penetrate the wall rocks of the diatreme to evaluate the effects of
phreatomagmatic explosions on poorly consolidated country rocks. This
ICDP-sponsored project will be the first attempt to drill a Quaternary
maar for scientific purposes; this site will mainly allow
investigation of the upper part of the maar-diatreme system.

2. The ultramafic diatremes of central Montana expose deeper
levels of the system (Hearn, 1968). These volcanoes are often cited as
type examples in diatreme discussions but have not, to our knowledge,
been studied using a modern physical volcanology approach. One focus
will be to document internal pipes with the vent structures and the
emplacement processes for these pipes (Ross and White 2006).

The candidate chosen will have experience in field geology, preferably
in volcanic environments. An MSc in earth sciences, or an equivalent
experience in research, is required. Knowledge of French is a
requirement for this project. Selection will be based on academic
merit, potential for research, and motivation. The application
deadline is September 15, 2008.

The student should be available between October 15 and November 15,
2008, for the drilling campaign in Patagonia. He or she will then
register at INRS from January 2009 onwards. PhDs in Earth Sciences are
planned for 3 years
(http://www.inrs.uquebec.ca/Francais/Annuaire/doctorat-terre-3527.htm).

All research costs (analyses, travel, field work, conferences, ...)
will be assumed by the project. A scholarship will be provided should
the selected student lack NSERC or FQRNT support. The scholarship will
cover the cost of living comfortably as a student in downtown Quebec
City as well the as tuition for Quebec residents (note: French
citizens pay the same fees than Quebec residents; others pay
international fees, which the scholarship unfortunately does not
cover).

Interested students should send their CV, a motivation letter, and the
complete coordinates of three referees immediately to Dr. Pierre-Simon
Ross (email below).
