Dear Colleagues,

Please consider a contribution to the following session at the
upcoming 2008 AGU Fall Meeting, in San Francisco.

V26: Observations and Modeling of Volcanic Blasts and Jets

Description:
Explosive volcanic degassing consists of a combination of discrete
blasts and more continuous jet flows, depending on the gas volume and
overpressure. Well-developed turbulent jet flows can either transition
with altitude into thermally buoyant plumes, or collapse to form
pyroclastic flows. This type of volcanic activity is amenable to
direct observation by visual, thermal, radar, infrasonic, and seismic
instrumentation. Numerical and analogue models, as well as analyses of
pyroclastic deposits, provide further insight into the fluid dynamics
of these processes. This session integrates observations and numerical
and analogue modeling of volcanic blasts and jets. We encourage
contributions that show observations or models that can provide
constraints on jet flow structure, mass fluxes, vent overpressures,
jet dimensions and velocities, the influence of vent and crater
geometry, temperature or composition of ejecta, and ballistic
velocities.
