Dear Colleagues,

Please consider submitting an abstract to the following session of
the IAVCEI General Assembly in Reykjavik (17 - 22 August 2008).
Abstract deadline is coming up very soon (April, 1st!!)
>From crystals to crust: Lithospheric and crustal growth and evolution

Conveners:
Colin Macpherson, Oliver Bachmann, Tracy Rushmer,

Some form of magmatic processing is required to generate andesitic
crust from the primary, basaltic melts inferred to be the main mass
flux out of the mantle. These processes must be understood in the
context of development of the whole lithosphere; however, several
aspects remain unexplained. What are the primary fluxes of melt into
the lithosphere and where are these concentrated? Where does
differentiation occur and which properties of melts and lithosphere
determine this? How faithfully do volcanic rocks and rock sequences
record the full chain of events comprising the differentiation
history of any one part of the crust? How does the maturity of
lithosphere influence rheological and geochemical processes? How do
the processes recorded in volcanic rocks relate to lithospheric
structure as revealed by geophysical, geochemical and field-based
observations? This session will aim to address these questions and
identify how modern geodynamics can be exploited to understand the
evolution of the crust throughout Earth history.

This session will focus on:
- Resolving melt differentiation processes using field-based
observations, whole rock geochemistry or microanalytical techniques
- Determining the loci and extent of melting and differentiation
through field, geochemical, experimental or numerical approaches
- Comparing modern geodynamic settings with ancient terrains to
understand past crustal growth
- Reconciling petrological, geochemical, structural and geophysical
models for the structure and evolution of the whole lithosphere.

Commission: Subduction Zone Magmatism
