Uppsala University, Sweden declares the following position to be open
for applications
Assistant Professor in Petrology at the Department of Earth Sciences

We seek to fill a position in petrology and geochemistry at assistant
professor level, aiming at a better understanding of the dynamic
evolution of Earth. Research directions within the programme include
experimental geochemistry, theoretical modelling, diagenetic
processes and tectonic modelling. Apart from basic equipment, an
electron microprobe, a high-pressure laboratory (diamond anvil cell),
a tectonic laboratory and an SEM exist amongst the facilities.

Employment period: The maximum employment period is 4 years.

Duties: The holder of the position is expected to pursue research to
develop her/his own career but the duties also include some lecturing
and supervision at undergraduate and graduate levels. The Assistant
Professor is expected to contribute to the activities of the
programme in petrology and mineralogy, ideally in a tectonic
perspective. The research direction should be pursued directly in the
field and by applying quantitative mineralogical, geochemical and/or
experimental methods.

Qualifications required: The applicant must hold a PhD in the
geosciences. Applicants who got their PhD less than 5 years ago will
be considered first. According to Uppsala University's appointment
regulations, it is also a general requirement that teachers have any
other skills, which are necessary to carry out their duties
proficiently. Ability to teach in Swedish or English is a
requirement. The holder is expected to teach in Swedish within two
years.

Criteria for ranking: Scientific skills in the area of dynamic
petrological processes will be primarily considered. Lecturing
experience in the geosciences is also a merit.

Special attention will be given to experience of field-work and
scientific methodology in magmatic and metamorphic petrology,
volcanology and transport processes, experimental petrology, isotope
geochemistry, in-situ studies of single crystals and/or modelling of
crystal growth, transport and/or diffusion processes.

In judging pedagogic skills, experience in planning, conduct and
evaluation of teaching together with guidance of students and
examining will be taken into account. Further details can be found in

In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person
who, in the combined evaluation of documented qualifications,
competence and skills is judged most suitable to carry out and
develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development
of the programme.
