************************************************************************** From: Christina Magill <cmagill@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> ************************************************************************** Dear colleagues, We would like to draw your attention to the following session on tephra risk that will be convened at the 2008 AGU Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting in Cairns, Australia, 29 July - 1 August 2008. The abstract submission deadline is 16 April 2008 and further information can be found at http://www.agu.org/meetings/wp08/. V02: Tephra Risk: A Multi-Disciplinary Problem Conveners: Christina Magill, Macquarie University, Australia cmagill@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Susanna Jenkins, Macquarie University, Australia. sjenkins@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Andrew Tupper, Bureau of Meteorology, Australia A.Tupper@xxxxxxxxxx Anthony Hurst, GNS Science, New Zealand, T.Hurst@xxxxxxxxxx Description: Ash sized tephra particles erupted during volcanic events may impact communities hundreds or even thousands of kilometres downwind from source. The corrosive and abrasive nature of these particles has implications for aviation safety, human health, agriculture, infrastructure and economic welfare. Understanding the likely impacts demands a multi-disciplinary approach, ranging from numerical modelling of particle dispersion and fallout through to consideration of societal consequences. With a view to stimulating new research on this important problem, this session will bring together physical and social scientists, engineers, health professionals and emergency managers. Topics to be addressed include advances in modelling techniques, quantifying the impacts from future tephra producing eruptions and the planning and preparation for such events. ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
