Position Announcement:
Dean, College of the Sciences, Central Washington University

The dean is the chief executive officer of the College of the Sciences
and provides leadership in all matters affecting the college, including,
but not limited to academic program planning, budget development,
curriculum development and delivery, hiring and personnel actions,
faculty/staff development, planning and development for facilities and
equipment, departmental operations, and responsiveness to students. He
or she works within a participatory structure with Central Washington
University faculty and administration. The dean fosters close working
relationships with and among all constituents of the university as well
as public agencies and the general public serving as an effective
ambassador for the College. He or she provides innovative leadership in
fund-raising from private, state, and federal sources, positioning the
college to respond successfully to the challenges and opportunities
facing contemporary higher education.

Twelve departments comprise the College of the Sciences: Anthropology,
Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography and Land
Studies, Geological Sciences, Law and Justice, Mathematics, Physics,
Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. In addition, the dean
oversees interdisciplinary programs in American Indian Studies, Energy
Studies, Environmental Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gerontology, Primate
Studies, Resource Management, Science Education, and Women Studies. The
dean plays an integral role in the leadership of the Center for Teaching
and Learning, which oversees the preparation of teachers and other
professional school personnel.

The college is also home to the Counseling Center, the Geodesy
Laboratory and Pacific Northwest Geodetic Array, and the Geographic
Information Systems Laboratory.

Required Qualifications:
-Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in a discipline
appropriate to the College of the Sciences.
-Academic credentials appropriate for appointment as tenured professor
within the College of the Sciences.
-Evidence of effective teaching and a strong record of research,
scholarship, and creative activity.
-Demonstrated successful leadership experience in an administrative
position at a level equivalent to department chair or above. This may
include team leadership, partnership building, organizational skills,
program development, implementation and assessment.
-Successful experience in budget management, human resource management,
and strategic planning.
-Strong interpersonal communication, writing, and speaking skills.
-Evidence of academic vision and commitment to continuous improvement.
-Evidence of success in obtaining external grant funds.
-Evidence of working with student, faculty, and staff cultures other
than one's own with an administrative style that fosters cooperation
among departments and programs.
-Commitment to the principles of shared administrative/faculty governance.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Demonstrated commitment to recruiting and retaining highly qualified
and diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
-Experience in managing multisite environments.
-Demonstrated commitment to and support of undergraduate and graduate
research, scholarship, and creative activity.
-Success in fund-raising.
-Commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and programs.
-Demonstrated ability to set and maintain high expectations for
teaching, scholarship, and service.
-Experience in and commitment to leadership in the preparation of K-12
teachers in the sciences.
-Have an understanding of issues facing public universities.
