******************************************************************* From: Olivier Bachmann <bachmano@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> ******************************************************************* Dear colleagues volcanophiles, We invite everyone who is interested to submit abstracts for the following symposium at the 2008 IAVCEI General Assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland, 18-22 August, 2008. The abstract submission deadline is 1April 2008. Title: From crystals to crust: Crustal growth and lithospheric evolution Conveners: C.G. Macpherson, O. Bachmann, T. Rushmer e-mails: colin.macpherson@xxxxxxxxxxxx, bachmano@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, trushmer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Description: Some form of magmatic processing is required to generate andesitic crust from the primary, basaltic melts inferred to be the main mass flux out of the mantle. These processes must be understood in the context of development of the whole lithosphere; however, several aspects remain unexplained. What are the primary fluxes of melt into the lithosphere and where are these concentrated? Where does differentiation occur and which properties of melts and lithosphere determine this? How faithfully do volcanic rocks and rock sequences record the full chain of events comprising the differentiation history of any one part of the crust? How does the maturity of lithosphere influence rheological and geochemical processes? How do the processes recorded in volcanic rocks relate to lithospheric structure as revealed by geophysical, geochemical and field-based observations? This session will aim to address these questions and identify how modern geodynamics can be exploited to understand the evolution of the crust throughout Earth history. The session will focus on the following areas of research: - Resolving melt differentiation processes using field- based observations, whole rock geochemistry or microanalytical techniques, - Determining the loci and extent of melting and differentiation through field, geophysical geochemical, experimental or numerical approaches, - Comparing modern geodynamic settings with ancient terrains to understand past and present crustal growth, - Reconciling petrological, geochemical, structural and geophysical models for the structure and evolution of the whole lithosphere. ----------------------------------------------- Olivier Bachmann Dept. of Earth and Space Sciences University of Washington Mailstop 351310 Seattle, WA 98195-1310 Ph: 206 543 7615 ----------------------------------------------- ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
