Dear All,

We would like to draw your attention to the following session on:

Environmental Effects of Volcanic Emissions

that will be convened at the 2008 IAVCEI General Assembly in Iceland. The
abstract submission deadline is 1 April 2008.

Volcanic volatile emissions - both during and between eruptions - can have
pronounced and widespread impacts on the atmospheric, terrestrial and
aquatic environments, including distal and proximal effects on air quality,
soil contamination, marine and terrestrial surface water composition, and
destruction or enhancement of vegetation. These environmental effects are
mediated through interactions with the volcanic volatiles present in the
gas and aerosol phases and/or adsorbed onto the surface of silicate ash
particles. In this session, we welcome interdisciplinary contributions from
geochemical, environmental, atmospheric and ecological perspectives, which
highlight the local to regional scale fate of volcanic emissions in the
environment.

This session will focus on:

- the tropospheric chemistry and transport of volcanic gases, aerosols and
ash particles; - the aqueous chemistry and transport of volcanic volatiles;
- the effects of volcanogenic ´pollution´ on the built environment, plants
and soils; - volatile-ash interactions in volcanic plumes - the release of
nutrients and toxic elements through dissolution processes of volcanic
glass and metal salts adsorbed onto ash; - fertilization effects and
impacts on biological productivity of volcanic emissions in marine or
terrestrial surface waters, - marine-atmospheric interchange due to
volcanic ash deposition onto the surface of oceans

Conveners:

Pierre Delmelle - pd512@xxxxxxxxxx
Svend Duggen - sduggen@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Paul Frogner Kockum - paul.frogner-kockum@xxxxxxxxxx
Clive Oppenheimer - co200@xxxxxxxxx
