Dear colleagues,

we are organizing a session on ''Statistical methods and stochastic
models for the estimation of volcanic hazard" at the upcoming General
Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), which is to be held
in Vienna, Austria, from April 13 to April 18, 2008. General
information about this conference can be obtained from the official
website

NH3.6 Statistical methods and stochastic models for the estimation of
volcanic hazard Natural Hazards
and
Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrology & Volcanology
**************************************************

Volcanic hazards are gaining relevance due to increasing societal
demands. The estimation of the volcanic hazard at different time
scales is of the utmost importance with the growth of population and
properties worldwide in volcanic areas. As input to risk assessments,
volcanic hazard constitutes the dominant source of uncertainty.

The aim of this session is to discuss and present the state of the art
in quantitative methods and models to estimate volcanic hazard, both
from the theoretical point of view and regarding their applications to
specific volcanic areas.

Such applications can imply very different timescales, depending if
the volcano under study is in a pre-eruptive or eruptive phase or
rather in a short or long term quiescence phase. The quantification of
volcanic hazard in probabilistic terms is the result of a succession
of many steps:
(1) geological and geophysical studies to characterize baseline information,
(2) multiparametric monitoring,
(3) identification and statistical analysis of precursory behaviours and
(4) stochastic modeling for hazard estimation using all available
data, evidence and knowledge.

We hereby invite you to submit an abstract to this session using the
COSIS system at

http://www.cosis.net/members/meetings/abstracts/submit2.php?m_id=49&s_id=5220

not later than January 14, 2008. For specific guidelines for the
submission of abstracts, please read the corresponding information at

http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2008/how_to_submit_an_abstract.html

There is also the possibility to benefit from a limited amount of
funding, which is especially considered for young scientists (in
particular, PhD students) and/or colleagues from economically
disadvantaged countries. In this case, you have to submit your
abstract by December 7, 2007 (THIS FRIDAY!) at

http://www.cosis.net/members/meetings/abstracts/submit2.php?m_id=49&s_id=5220&fs_request=yes

Looking forward to seeing you in Vienna!

The conveners. Roberto Carniel & Olivier Jaquet
