*************************************************************************** From: JOÃO CARLOS NUNES <jcnunes@xxxxxxxxxxxx> *************************************************************************** Dear colleagues, On July 9, 1998 a magnitude M=6 earthquake struck three islands of the Central Group of Azores Archipelago (Faial, Pico and São Jorge), causing 8 deaths, over 100 injuries, and thousands of homeless. A large portion of the building stock located within 30 km from the epicenter was affected with more than 700 collapses. In the aftermath of the event, a large operation of reconstruction took place and 10 years after it is possible to make an overall evaluation of the entire process of reconstruction, and rehabilitation. A book with a compilation of data related to the main aspects of the 1998 Azores Earthquake and describing the reconstruction is being prepared to evocate the 10th anniversary. Thus, on July 9 – 13, 2008 we are organizing an "International Seminar on Seismic Risk and Rehabilitation of Stone Masonry Housing, on the event of the 10th Anniversary of the July 9, 1998 Azores Earthquake", for experts to present and debate issues related to the lessons obtained in recent earthquakes with similar problems. It is a unique opportunity to join together experts on seismology and on earthquake engineering of volcanic regions with special emphasis on masonry structures under seismic threat and to present methods for assessing their vulnerability and to present new ideas for the rehabilitation, including cost/benefit analysis. Besides the sessions with oral presentations and posters, a visit to the zones more affected by the earthquake will be organized. Therefore we invite you to participate in the above mentioned seminar and/or present papers, accordingly to the detailed information and deadlines appended. In order to better prepare your participation we would like to call your attention to the following important points: 1- the Seminar will take place at Horta city (Faial Island, Azores), between 9 and 13 July (*); 2- to ensure travel reservations and the participants lodging (due the high/Summer season), a Special Package, including the Conference fee, 4 nights single room hotel, transfers and the Lisbon-Horta-Lisbon aerial ticket, is offered to all ordinary participants.
