Dear Colleagues,

please consider presenting your contribution to the NH3.3 session of the
upcoming 2008 EGU meeting:

Session NH3.3: Models for volcanic hazard assessment (co-listed in GMPV)

Organizers: A.Costa, A.Folch and C.Bonadonna

Session description: Hazards associated with volcanism affect lives,
economy and properties of communities located near active volcanoes.
Elevated temperatures, large dynamical pressures and high particle
concentrations make pyroclastic density currents among the most
destructive and lethal of volcanic hazards. Lahars associated with the
flow of volcanic material can cause massive destruction by direct impact
or burying valleys and communities with debris. Volcanic ash fallout
causes
several undesirable effects, such as the collapse of roofs by ash loading,
respiratory sicknesses, air traffic disruption or damage to agriculture.
Recent experiences at Mt. Etna have shown that forecast lava flow path is
essential in planning risk mitigation counter-measurements for villages
and towns on the slopes of an active volcano. Quantification of volcanic
hazards is therefore a matter of importance which requires the development
and the implementation of elaborated models. This session brings together
contributions in which different modelling approaches and novel techniques
are presented.

Abstract Submission deadline: 14 January 2008
