INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON SEISMIC RISK AND REHABILITATION OF STONE
MASONRY HOUSING, ON THE EVENT OF THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE JULY 9,
1998 AZORES
EARTHQUAKE
From: JOÃO CARLOS NUNES <jcnunes@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

Date: July 4 to 9, 2008
www.azores1998earthquake.org
                       Local: Horta, Azores

Objective:
In July 9, 1998 a magnitude M=6 earthquake struck three islands of the
Central Group of Azores Archipelago, Faial, Pico and São Jorge, causing 8
deaths, over 100 injures and thousands of homeless. A large portion of the
building stock located within 30 km from the epicenter was affected with a
more than 700 collapses. The predominant type of construction in the
region is made of poor masonry one to three story high buildings. Damage
to monumental structures, road network and landslides were observed near
the epicentral area.
In the aftermath of the event, a large operation of reconstruction took
place and 10 years after it is possible to make an overall evaluation of
the entire process of reconstruction, and rehabilitation. A Book with a
compilation of data related to the main aspects of the 1998 Azores
Earthquake and describing the reconstruction is being prepared to evocate
the 10th anniversary.
This is also the time to organize an "International Seminar on Seismic
Risk and Rehabilitation of Stone Masonry Housing, on the event of the 10th
Anniversary of the July 9, 1998 Azores Earthquake", for experts to present
and debate issues related to the lessons obtained in recent earthquakes
with similar problems.

Scientific Sessions:
Two days with Scientific Sessions, July 7 and 8th, 2008 (Monday and
Tuesday) with presentations on the 1998 Azores Earthquake and by
international experts who are invited to submit technical and scientific
contributions. There will be a Plenary Lecture, at the opening session and
4 Keynote Lectures with invited speakers, at each of the four sessions
(morning and afternoon). Contributions from Portuguese and abroad
researchers either as oral presentations or posters are welcome. The
official language of the Seminar is English.
Extended Abstracts/Papers will be published in a CDRom to be given to
participants at the registration on site. The edition of a Special Issue
of an International Journal may be considered in the sequence of the
Seminar if material presented deserves that particular attention.
On July 9th, 2008 (morning) all participants are invited to a public
ceremony Evocative of the 1998 Azores Earthquake, and the opening of an
exhibition with pictures and graphical material that make the history of
the earthquake.

Technical Visits:
There will be guided tours to Pico and Faial Islands to the area more
affected by the 1998 earthquake where the participants can observe the
geological features of the islands (including volcanic landscapes and
fault scarps), landslide areas, the type of damage inflicted to the
building and monumental structures, and to check the rehabilitation. These
visits will take two entire days, on July 5 and 6th, 2008. Experimental in
situ testing of old masonry structures will also take place during the
Seminar.

Place of Sessions
The Seminar will take place at a Congress Centre, in the City of Horta,
Faial Island, Azores.
