----------

Senior Volcano Seismologist, MVO, Montserrat West Indies

The British Geological Survey (BGS) working in conjunction with the
Government of Montserrat (GoM) at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory
(MVO) is responsible for providing a team of scientists to monitor the
activity of the Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV). In line with the terms
of its contract with the GoM, BGS intends to recruit an experienced
volcano-seismologist to work at the MVO.

As the volcano-seismologist at the MVO, you will work as a member of
the BGS monitoring team under the management of the MVO Director. You
will lead the team responsible for monitoring and interpreting the
seismicity and seismic activity of the SHV, reporting the team's
findings in a timely manner to the MVO Director and through the
Director to the relevant authorities on Montserrat and in the UK.

You will have a good degree in an earth science or relevant physical
science subject, and are likely to hold a postgraduate qualification
such as an MSc or PhD in seismology or volcanology. You will be able
to demonstrate previous involvement and experience in an active
volcano monitoring programme. Knowledge of remote sensing
applications, computer programming and software development and other
aspects of volcano monitoring would be highly beneficial.

Salary is likely to be in the range UK£29,360 per annum to UK£34,630
per annum depending on qualifications and experience.

The post is tied to the current BGS contract with the Government of
Montserrat, which concludes at the end of March 2008. The position is
therefore offered on a short-term basis to conclude on 31 March 2008.
It is locally based, residential on Montserrat and is non-mobile.
Fluency in English is essential. Applications from candidates with a
background in Montserrat or the Caribbean region are especially
welcome.

Further information can be obtained from the MVO project manager, Dr
Bill McCourt (mailto:wjmc@xxxxxxxxx). Completed application forms
should be returned to Personnel (Recruitment) British Geological
Survey, Keyworth Nottingham NG12 5GG, Fax +44 115 9363537, Email
