Dear Colleagues

Volcanic thermal emission was detected on August 27 2007 from
Oldoinyo Lengai, Tanzania, by the NASA Earth Observing-1 (EO-1)
spacecraft. Onboard EO-1 are the Hyperion hyperspectral imager and
the ALI multispectral imager, both of which cover visible and
short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) wavelengths. Hyperion data
(30m/pixel) show two very bright sources in the summit crater with
spectra consistent with hot, erupting lava. There is also an
indication of a short lava flow, flowing from the crater to the
northwest. Based on a preliminary analysis of the Hyperion data,
effusion rate at this time is estimated at ~0.5 m3/s.

As part of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Volcano Sensor Web,
the EO-1 observation was triggered autonomously by an alert from the
MODVOLC system (which processes MODIS data) at the University of
Hawaii. Hyperion data are processed onboard EO-1 by the Autonomous
Sciencecraft Experiment (ASE). Notification of the detection of
anomalous thermal emission was received at JPL from ASE within two
hours of data acquisition. The Hyperion data were downlinked and
processed at JPL within 36 hours of acquisition. The entire
detection, alert, spacecraft retasking, onboard data processing and
product transmission cycle is autonomous, and therefore rapid.

Ashley Davies, JPL.
