Dear IAVCEI members:

I am Setsuya Nakada, serving as the new president of IAVCEI since the
Perugia meeting. The Awards Committee, chaired by me, invites
nomination for the Thorarinsson, Wager and Krafft medals and George
Walker Awards for the next General Assembly (Iceland in August 2008).

Awards Committee members
- Charlie Bacon (USA)
- Don Dingwell (Germany)
- Setsuya Nakada (Japan, Chair)
- Hazel Rymer (UK)
- Claus Siebe (Mexico)

Nomination packages for all medals and awards should include:
(1) a formal nomination letter, not to exceed three pages,
(2) a curriculum vitae, and
(3) at least three supporting letters originating from different
institutions
(two such letters are sufficient for the George Walker Awards).

* A document certifying the age of the candidate is needed for the
Wager Medal.
* Certification of the date when the Ph.D. was awarded is needed for
the George Walker Awards.

Nomination packages are due December 15, 2007 to the IAVCEI Awards
Committee, c/o Setsuya Nakada (nakada@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, Earthquake
Research Institute, University of Tokyo, 1-1-1 Yayoi, Bunkyo-ku,
Tokyo 113-0032, Japan). They should be sent by e-mail (as PDF or DOC
documents). A single hard copy of certificates and recommendation
letters should also be sent by mail.

[THORARINSSON MEDAL]
The Thorarinsson Medal honors the memory of Professor Sigurdur
Thorarinsson who was born on January 8, 1912, in Vopnafjordur,
eastern Iceland, and died in Reykjavik on February 8, 1983. Professor
Thorarinsson is known for his pioneering work in volcanology,
especially tephrochronology of Iceland. The medal was donated by the
Iceland Geoscience Society. The medal is the most senior medal of
IAVCEI. It is given every four years at the IAVCEI General Assembly
to a scientist of outstanding distinction who made fundamental
contributions to research in volcanology.

[WAGER MEDAL]
The Wager Medal honors the memory of Professor Lawrence Rickard
Wager of the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, who was born in
1904 and died in 1965. Professor Wager is best known for the
discovery of the Skaergaard layered intrusion and the first detailed
structural, mineralogical and petrological study of such intrusions.
The medal is given every two years to a single scientist under the
age of 40 (see below) who has made outstanding contributions to
volcanology, particularly in the eight-year period prior to the
Awards. Candidates must be under the age of 40 on the 31 of December
of the year preceding the IAVCEI meeting at which the award is made.

[KRAFFT MEDAL]
The Krafft Medal honors the memory of Katia Krafft (1942-1991)
and Maurice Krafft (1946-1991) who were killed while photographing a
pyroclastic flow on Mount Unzen, Japan in 1991. The Kraffts were
pioneers in filming, photographing and recording volcanoes. The medal
is co-sponsored by the Krafft family. The Krafft Medal is given to an
individual who has made outstanding contributions to volcanology
through service to the scientific community or to communities
threatened by volcanic activity. The Krafft Medal honors those who
have shown altruism and dedication to the humanitarian and applied
sides of volcanology and those who have made selfless contributions
to the volcanological community.

[GEORGE WALKER AWARDS]
The George Walker Awards honor the memory of Professor George
Walker, FRS, who was born on March 2, 1926 and died on January 17,
2005. Professor Walker's discoveries pioneered a modern quantitative
approach to physical volcanology and greatly accelerated
understanding of volcanic processes. The awards are supported by the
George Walker Fund. The awards recognize the achievements of two
outstanding recent graduates in the fields of research encompassed by
IAVCEI. One of the awards recognizes a recent graduate whose
achievements in volcanology involved operating in difficult
circumstances. The awards are open to IAVCEI members who received
their Ph.D. up to two years before the previous deadline (this time:
after 31 December 2002). The winners will receive a certificate, a
cash award, free registration at the General Assembly where the award
will be made and an invitation to deliver a lecture at that General
Assembly.

*The decisions of committee will be announced to the winners and
their nominators shortly before the deadline of abstract submission
for 2008 General Assembly (February 2008). The citation and
acceptance speeches will be delivered during the General Assembly,
and will be published in the IAVCEI newsletters.

Note: deadline of this submission in IAVCEI home page may be
incorrect. It will be renewed soon.
*** Deadline is December 15, 2007 ***

Sincerely,

Setsuya Nakada
President of IAVCEI
