Dear Members of the IAVCEI and volcano-lovers:

The 5th Cities on Volcanoes conference will be held in Shimabara, Japan in this
November under the auspice of the IAVCEI (International Association of
Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior). (Visit
http://www.citiesonvolcanoes5.com/ for more details of the conference.) Before
the conference, the IAVCEI Commission on Explosive Volcanism (CEV) will run a
field workshop on Jeju (Cheju) Island, Korea. The leaders are Dr. Ki Hwa Park
and myself (Young Kwan Sohn). The field workshop will focus on intraplate mafic
explosive volcanism with special reference to phreatomagmatism and volcano-
sedimentary processes on volcanic islands.

I like to inform the members of the IAVCEI and volcano-lovers as well as the
potential participants of the field workshop that Jeju Volcanic Island has been
inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage List during a meeting of the World
Heritage Committee in Christchurch, New Zealand, last week (29 June). Jeju
Island could be inscribed on the World Heritage List because of its outstanding
aesthetic beauty and universal scientific value in understanding the history of
our planet. To be more specific, the island comprises a number of lava tubes
decorated with diverse carbonate speleothems, which have extreme aesthetic
beauty, and about a dozen phreatomagmatic volcanoes (tuff rings and tuff
cones), many of which became reference type locations in the international
volcanological/sedimentological literature because of their spectacular world-
class exposures. The CEV field workshop on Jeju Island this November will
therefore be an unusual opportunity to experience the beauty and geology of
Jeju Island for volcanologists and sedimentologists.

At present, ten scientists from seven countries expressed their interest in the
field workshop. So, there are still many places available for a participation
in the workshop. I am planning to accept application for the workshop until the
end of this month. The workshop is open to every member of the IAVCEI. I
especially like to encourage the members of the CVS (Commission on Volcanogenic
Sedimentation) as well as the CEV to consider to participate in this field
workshop. The field workshop will cost about 600 USD (not including
international airfares to/from Jeju) and will start on 13 November in the
morning and end on 17 November at noon at Jeju Island. For more details on this
field workshop, please visit the COV5 official website
(http://www.citiesonvolcanoes5.com/) or email me (yksohn@xxxxxxxxxx).
