**************************************** From: Andrew Tupper <A.Tupper@xxxxxxxxxx> **************************************** Dear all, Further to Warner Marzocchi's note about the IAVCEI workshop on 12 July at the IUGG, I would also like to bring to your attention an all-day workshop being held on 11 July, being principally organised by Warner and myself for WOVO (World Organisation of Volcano Observatories, a commission of IAVCEI), with strong input from Mauro Coltelli of INGV. In the workshop we will be discussing the challenges and opportunities to volcano observatories offered with increasing globalisation, and dealing with issues such as the need to transmit warnings for hazards such as drifting volcanic clouds to users far removed from the volcano. We will look at local issues (such as the situation in Italy), and also hear from international organisations (such as, for example, the recently created cost-recovery mechanism to fund communications of volcanic information from designated observatories to the aviation industry). To help get an idea of numbers and also to indicate your interest in receiving a finalised copy of the workshop program by E-mail, I would be very grateful if any potential attendees could E-mail me (there is no commitment implied). The longer description of the workshop from the IAVCEI website is below. regards, Andrew Tupper Co-chairman WOVO (World Organisation of Volcano Observatories) Supervising Meteorologist Bureau of Meteorology, Darwin, Australia Ph: +61 (0)8 8920 3872 Mobile: +61 (0)417 897 324 Fax: +61 (0)8 8920 3829 -------------------------------------------------- VW002: The World Organisation of Volcano Observatories, a commission of IAVCEI, will convene this workshop. Natural hazard mitigation has increasingly globalised over the past few years. The workshop will consider the role and status of volcanic observatories as the 'official' warning source for non-localised, international volcanic hazards, such as drifting volcanic ash clouds and volcanic tsunami. The role of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in the International Airways Volcano Watch (IAVW) will be discussed in detail, along with the potential opportunities afforded by pooling the remote sensing, communications and funding capacities of IAVW members. Our discussion will centre on strategies to use these opportunities to enhance volcanic monitoring, and to co-ordinate the flow of official information from observatories to international organisations and to the media. Speakers from volcanic observatories will be encouraged to share their own positive and negative experiences with these issues, and their ideas for the future. United Nations agencies such as WMO and ICAO will share their perspectives on international co-operation and data exchange. ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
