FVT006 - Monte Vulture IAVCEI FIELD for Perugia2007

Date: July 14 – 17, 2007

Costs: Due to the different logistic constraints (e.g., bus/van), the costs of the field trip vary depending on the number of participants. We defined the following costs: 400 € /person (for a total number of participants equal to 30 people), 460 € (20 people), and 440 € (10 people). The trip will be cancelled if less than 10 people will apply. Payment: participants have to give the fees directly to the trip-leader at the beginning of the trip. Accommodation: in double room at the Hotel San Barbato, ss 93 km.56,300, 85024 - Lavello(Pz), 0039-0972-81392. Meeting point: in Perugia, at 9 AM on July 14. More details will be communicated to all participants in due time.

Program:
The trip will focus both on the ultra-alkaline volcanic centers of Umbria and Latium and on the Monte Vulture volcano in Basilicata. The Umbria and Latium volcanism includes numerous small eruptive centres characterized by the presence of extrusive carbonatites, melilite-bearing rocks, and kamafugites. The extrusive carbonatite occurrence of Monticchio is only one of the features we will see at Monte Vulture volcano. The two days of Monte Vulture trip will be focused on the growth and the breakdown of this volcano and on the relationships between its primary and epiclastic deposits.

Day 1 : Travel by bus from Perugia to Lavello. On the road, stop at San Venanzo maar (30 km S-SW from Perugia). After dinner, briefing on the Monte Vulture geology, in the conference hall of the Hotel San Barbato. Day 2 : From the first volcanic episodes to the grown of the Vulture-San Michele main edifice. Stop 1: Fara d’Olivo; 2: Sant’Antonio- Rionero statigraphic sequence; 3: Mele-Madonna di Costantinopoli quarry; 4: Gaudianello sequence; 5: Melfi hauynophyre Day 3 : The breakdown of the volcano and the tectonic-controlled ascent of the deeply generated magmas of the Monticchio phase. Stop1: Ventaruolo quarry statigraphic sequence 2: Ciaulino centres 3: Case Lopes quarry; 3: Laghi di Monticchio maars; 4: Monticchio carbonatites. Day 4: Travel from Monte Vulture to Perugia. On the road, stop at Oricola tuff rings (near Avezzano). End of the trip in Perugia.
