If you are a student or know of a student that is considering taking a Geology Field Camp this summer, the Eastern Illinois University Geology Field Camp still has space available. Our camp is based in the Black Hills of South Dakota and features traditional mapping techniques supplemented by GPS and laser range finder technologies. Besides mapping sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks in the Black Hills, the camp takes an 11 day geological journey across Wyoming. There we visit classic sites such as Devils Tower, the Sheep Mountain anticline, Heart Mountain allocthon, Yellowstone National Park, Gran Tetons National Park, the Gros Ventre slide, Fremont Lake, and the Leucite Hills. In Yellowstone, all students assist faculty from EIU and Wilkes University collecting high precision GPS data and hot spring T and pH data as part of an ongoing geodetic/geothermal research project monitoring the Yellowstone caldera. This 6-week, 6 credit hour course runs from May 27 - July 7, 2007 and costs $2900. For more information, please contact Craig Chesner (cachesner@xxxxxxx, 217/581-6323) or visit http://www.eiu.edu/~geoscience/fieldcamp.html for an itinerary and application. The application deadline will be extended to April 15.
