Dear Colleagues,

a scientific session about ‘Deep drilling at volcanic areas: developments
in volcanology and perspectives for geothermal energy exploitation’ (V23)
will be held at the AGU 2007 Joint Assembly in Acapulco, Mexico, 22-25 May
2007. The session will be devoted to study the multidisciplinary aspects
of deep drilling at volcanic areas, and its scientific benefits for
volcanology, with attention to possible spin-offs on high technologies
(including deep observatories) and geothermal energy exploitation. We
invite all of you to participate to the session. The dead-line for
abstract submission is March 1. The session description follows:

Detailed knowledge of deep volcanic structure is the most important tool
of the modern volcanological research. Although, in the last decades, the
use of indirect geophysical methods to study volcanic structures has
become a widespread and powerful tool for volcanology, some important
questions of key volcanological interest have remained basically unsolved,
due to some ambiguities of such indirect methods. Among them: the
unambiguous location of the main magma bodies, the precise knowledge of
rehology, temperature and stress at depth, the detailed description of
geothermal systems and their interaction with magma bodies during unrest
episodes and eruptions. Direct drilling can strongly improve our knowledge
of volcanic structure and mechanisms. Furthermore, volcanic areas are
likely to be the ideal sites for intensive exploitation in terms of
geothermal energy, which could become, in the next future, one of the most
attracting alternative sources of energy, renewable and of low
environmental impact. This session is aimed to the understanding of the
full potential of deep drilling at volcanoes, as a powerful tool for the
solution of many key volcanological problems by direct observation. We
welcome any topics related to this argument, including projects, reports
on already active deep drilling, not only at volcanoes but also in other
areas to learn from experience done. We also welcome contributions on
possible improvement of volcanic monitoring by use of borehole and deep
well monitoring systems. Moreover, we warmly invite contributions about
geothermal energy exploitation, including new technologies for low and
high enthalpy environments.

for any detail and for abstract submission.

Best Wishes
