From: Richard C Aster <aster@xxxxxxxxxxx>
*************************************

The Department of Earth and Environmental Science at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Position in Volcanology with special emphasis on Volcano Conduit Processes. The position is supported through funding for the Mount Erebus Volcano Observatory (MEVO), Antarctica from the Office of Polar Programs, NSF.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or a related field at the time of appointment, as well as a significant record and/or promise of relevant interdisciplinary research productivity. Suitable research backgrounds may include any combination of the following areas: fluid dynamics and thermodynamics; geophysical measurement and modelling; petrologic or geochemical studies of volatile behavior in magmas. Good mathematical/numerical and presentational skills are essential. Women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply

The principal responsibility will be to undertake observational and/or experimental and/or theoretical studies on volcanic conduit processes especially as they apply to Erebus volcano and to expand relevant results from this Strombolian eruptive system to more general volcanic systems.

Research activities will be carried out in association with the various researchers working at Erebus volcano including NM Tech faculty and staff, graduate and undergraduate students, MEVO visiting researchers, and the NSF Office of Polar Programs. Principal expectations include significant research and publication using the existing and planned geophysical, geological, and geochemical datasets from Erebus volcano. Additional responsibilities include assisting in the coordination of MEVO seasonal field activities in Antarctica and in ongoing year-round monitoring (www.ees.nmt.edu/Geop/Erebus/erebus.html <http://www.ees.nmt.edu/Geop/Erebus/erebus.html>).
