Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to our session on

"New monitoring techniques applied to active volcanoes"

to be held during the EGU General Assembly, Vienna, Austria, 15-20 April, 2007.

A description of the session is provided below.

Best regards,

Susanna Falsaperla

GMPV2 New monitoring techniques applied to active volcanoes

Conveners: S. Falsaperla, C. Oppenheimer, M. Edmonds

Multi-parameter volcano monitoring strategies have contributed tremendously to our understanding of how volcanoes work. The wealth of data obtained helps to build an evolving conceptual framework for the sources, storage, transport and rheology of magma, which can be continually re-evaluated and refined.

We seek new contributions concerning the latest developments in instrumentation (including remote sensing, seismology, geodesy, geochemistry, ground-based radar, thermal, gravity, geomagnetic and acoustic methods), and in data telemetry, processing, and modelling in volcanic areas. We equally encourage reports of recent 'case studies' highlighting integration and/or interpretation of observations, the critical review of more 'classical' surveillance methods, and discussion of measurements that bridge the gap between different kinds of sensors and/or fields of applications (e.g., broadband seismometers, borehole sensors, OBS).
