Lectureship in Earth Sciences

This post is available from 1 January 2007 or as soon as posible thereafter for
initial fixed term of 2 years. The School of Earth Sciences and Geography is
seeking to appoint two highly motivated individuals to strengthen the School's
research profile. These are primarily research positions but will also include
some Undergraduate and Masters-level teaching in areas appropriate to the
successful candidates' expertise. Applications are invited from candidates with
interests that develop and capitalize on the School's three main research foci:
Geodynamics and Crustal Processes; Environmental Change; and Rural Geography and
Socio-economic Change.

Research in Geodynamics and Crustal Processes is focused on petrogenetic and
geophysical processes, mainly in Earth's crust and mantle. Specific areas
include partial melting processes and the origins of magmas, volcanic geology
and large igneous provinces, magma physics, fluid-rock interactions and
mineralisation, hydrocarbons in crystalline rocks, collision-zone tectonics and
applications of palaeomagnetism to global geodynamics. We are seeking applicants
whose research would complement our specialties and work at the interface
between Geology and Physical Geography. We are particularly interested to hear
from candidates with expertise in geophysical monitoring/modelling, surface
processes and natural hazards.

The successful candidates will have completed a PhD in Geography, Earth Science,
Geology or a cognate discipline, have a strong profile of academic publication
and be able to demonstrate the potential to develop externally-funded research
programmes.

The School of Earth Sciences and Geography has a series of modern well-equipped
research laboratories dedicated to Experimental Petrology, GIS, Palaeomagnetics,
Palynology, Soils and Sediments. Kingston hosts the UK NERC ICP-MS Facility and
there are also laboratories for Laser-Raman Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron
Microscopy/EMP analysis, Fluid Inclusion analysis, Thin Sectioning, Rock Cutting
and Rock and Cold Storage.
