Dear colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to our session on:
VS016 Volcanic-plutonic provinces: a tool to understand magma genesis
and geodynamics to be held during the IUGG General Assembly, Perugia,
Italy, July 2-13, 2007.
A description of the session is provided below.
Looking forward to seeing you at Perugia, with best regards,

VS016: Volcanic-plutonic provinces: a tool to understand magma genesis
and geodynamics
Sponsoring Association: IAVCEI
Igneous provinces where coeval volcanic and plutonic formations are
exposed together are of great importance in understanding genesis and
evolution of magmas in the context of crustal accretion and structuring.
They can be found in all geodynamic environments with magmas spanning a
large range of compositions and geochemical affinities. However, despite
recent advances in trace element geochemistry, isotope systematics and
chronology, and experimental petrology, the link between tectonic
settings and petrogenetic processes in volcanic-plutonic provinces is
not yet fully understood and, even, has been questioned.
This session is aimed to discuss the physical and chemical mechanisms
responsible for the genesis and evolution of volcanic and plutonic
magmatism, and how these mechanisms are reflected in the mineralogy, and
the chemical and isotopic composition of rocks. The scope is to bring
together specialists in the fields of geodynamics, volcanic and plutonic
geology, petrology, and geochemistry, with experience in
volcanic-plutonic provinces in different geodynamic settings from the
Archean to recent, in order to gain a more comprehensive knowledge on
the genesis, evolution, and interrelationships between volcanism and
plutonism.
