**************************************************************** Geophysicist (seismic network manager) position opening at HVO **************************************************************** From: James P Kauahikaua <jimk@xxxxxxxx> The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii is seeking to fill a Geophysicist position at the GS 11/12 level. The primary purpose of this position is to manage the operation of the HVO seismic monitoring network and supervise the daily operations of the HVO seismic data analysis group. This is a permanent position. At the GS-12 level major duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Real-time Seismic Monitoring Overseeing HVO seismic field network and data acquisition, processing and archiving/retrieval activities. The HVO seismic network consists of nearly 60 stations on two islands producing about 150 channels of continuous seismic data. Accurate information on the precise location, magnitude, and source mechanism of earthquakes in near real-time is imperative for HVO management to properly deploy field crews and to advise civil authorities. Leading regular oversight discussions of the performance of HVO real-time seismic monitoring network to ensure effective operations of real-time and near real-time data acquisition, processing, and reporting systems, as well as post-processing and data archival and retrieval systems. Supervising seismic data analysts, who are responsible for timing, locating, and compiling Hawaii earthquake catalogs which are exported monthly to the Northern California Earthquake Data Center at UC Berkeley, included in annual reports for public distribution, and included as part of the historical HVO database of earthquake activity in Hawaii. Helps set priorities of station repairs and equipment upgrades for seismic electronic technicians. Preparing specialized reports or data sets according to the needs and request of other scientists conducting research and associated studies of earthquakes or seismic activity in Hawaii. Tasks include database organization of earthquakes, oral and multimedia weekly briefings to HVO staff, written contributions summarizing seismic activity to HVO?s bimonthly administrative reports, and manuscript preparation. Eruption Response In consultation with the research seismologist, overseeing the seismological response to unrest. Activities include prioritizing installation of new instruments at the volcano, initiating new monitoring software, or insuring the data are being properly archived. The incumbent evaluates data and helps interpret the nature of potential volcanic activity and resultant hazards, and reports to HVO managers, the scientific community, other government and disaster relief agencies, the media, and the public as appropriate. Observatory Operations Interacting with other HVO personnel, the public, and other agencies regarding status of volcanic activity, responding to volcanic events or emergencies, and communicating with pertinent agencies during times of volcanic unrest. The GS-11 grade level requires performance of tasks similar in nature to those described in the above listing of major duties. The GS-11 grade level employee is assigned work designed to further develop and refine their technical knowledge and skills. Assignments will typically combine productive work with on going training and instruction. Supervision received at the lower grade level will be closer with oversight and review being provided more frequently. You must be a U.S. citizen to be eligible for this position. Applications (resume and application questions) for this vacancy must be received on-line via the USGS Online Automated Recruitment System (OARS) BEFORE midnight Eastern Time (Washington, D.C. time) on May 22, 2006.
