*************************************************************** International Continental Scientific Drilling Program Workshop *************************************************************** From: John Eichelberger <eich@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> ICDP Workshop THE MAGMA-HYDROTHERMAL CONNECTION: MUTNOVSKY VOLCANO AND THE MUTNOVSKY GEOTHERMAL RESERVOIR Mutnovsky volcano and Mutnovsky geothermal reservoir in Kamchatka, Russia provide an ideal geometry for exploring the magma-hydrothermal connection by drilling. A 62 MWe power plant taps a productive zone that strikes towards Mutnovsky?s active vent with 700oC fumaroles. Geochemical data support the view that the geothermal fluids are derived from the environment of Mutnovsky?s hot conduit. An international workshop will be held to prioritize and sharpen definitions of primary scientific objectives, and frame a scientific drilling proposal. Objectives to be discussed include: (1) Identifying magmatic components in fluids proximal to the conduit and their relationship to fluids of the producing system. (2) Monitoring physical parameters to assess the hydraulic connectedness of the volcanic and geothermal systems. (3) Acquiring and interpreting, in terms of magma evolution, a comprehensive eruption and chemical history of Mutnovsky volcano. (4) In-situ measurement of the response of the magma-hydrothermal system to earthquakes and eruptions, including precursory changes. (5) Comparing the conduit environment of a short-repose period volcano with that of Unzen, a long-repose period volcano. (6) Determining the overall volatile and thermal budget of the volcano by assessing subsurface hydrothermal advection as well as emission to atmosphere. The workshop will include participants from a variety of disciplines, who will develop the rationale and scientific basis for the project, site selection criteria, formation of a science team and outline a proposal for submission to International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) and national funding agencies. We invite participants from all countries, with preference given to countries that are members of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program. The workshop will be held in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, in September 24-29, 2006 and will include a field trip to potential drilling sites. Interested researchers are invited to submit a brief summary of their research interests, describing their intended contribution to this international project. Participants will be selected on the basis of their research summary, and we will attempt to cover participation expenses from ICDP funds. Interested parties should submit their letter of application by May 15, 2006 to John Eichelberger at eich@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with cc to Alexey Kiryukhin at avk2@xxxxxxxxxx with ?ICDP? in subject line. For more information visit the website at http://www.icdp-online.org/kamchatka . In addition to ICDP, the workshop is sponsored by the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology FEB RAS, P-Kamchatsky; University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute; Kamchatka Geological Survey; Geoterm Stock Company; Kamchatskburgeotermia SUE, and Kamchatka State University.
