GARAVOLCAN 2006
300th Anniversary Volcano Conference**
Commemorating the 1706 Arenas Negras Eruption**
Tenerife, Canary Islands, SPAIN*<>*

May 22-26, 2006***

This international conference will be held at the San Francisco's Old
Convent (Garachico, Tenerife, Canary Islands, SPAIN) from May 22 to 26,
2006. GARAVOLCAN 2006 is organized by the Atlantis Forum and sponsored
by the Government of the Canary Islands, the City of Garachico and the
Instituto Tecnologico y de Energias Renovables (Tenerife, Canary
Islands, Spain) for commemorating the 300th anniversary of the 1706
Arenas Negras eruption. In spite of the short time interval of this 1706
eruption (9 days), this volcanic event was the most important historical
eruption at Tenerife because of its tremendous impact on the social and
economic development of the Island of Tenerife during the XVIII century,
specially for the City of Garachico. This conference is planned as an
international forum for specialists working on reducing volcanic risk,
specially in islands environments. Scientific and technical sessions are
planned to bring together researchers from different disciplines and
civil protection specialists who share a common goal, but who
historically have had only limited interactions with each other.
Sessions related to volcano monitoring techniques as well as emergency
plans are not restricted to island environments. Garachico is a small
stunning village, which had the first commercial port of the island,
till 1706 when an eruption destroyed the port. At present Garachico is a
beautiful village, with some unforgettable historic squares. *
