****************************************** One presumed killed in Kermadec eruption ****************************************** From: Owen Calder <OCalder@xxxxxxxxxxx> A volcanic crater on Raoul Island, 1,000 kilometres north of New Zealand in the Kermadecs, erupted at about 8:20 am today (Friday, 17 March). The eruption from Green Lake crater threw out mud, rocks and a plume of steam, and continued for 30 minutes. The eruption had been preceded by a swarm of tectonic earthquakes that began Sunday night but tapered off over the next few days. New Zealand Department of Conservation officials have evacuated five of the staff on the island. One worker who was taking water temperature measurements at the crater lake at time of the eruption, is presumed killed. http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2006/s1594384.htm http://msnbc.msn.com/id/11867351/ http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3608617a10,00.html http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3608616a10,00.html ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
