If it requires changing the MTU, this is because the driver is broken for VLANs.

My suggestion is to use Intel pro/1000, pro/100, realtek 8139, broadcom (tg3 driver NICs). I know all of these work..and a large number of others work as well. From recent reports, it seems Sundance may not work, and I am not sure if the tulip driver ever got fixed either...
