It doesn't record in the background to surprise you! It has to record, to do playback AND pause, so the key is doing EXACTLY what you expect from that key. Pausing eather a playback when watching a recording or pausing live-TV. Well at least I think it is more logical, to pause my live TV than doing just nothing at all...
