Great, please Cc me on that, I'll be interested in the response.

I've just tried searching for SWAPSPACE2 in the linux-kernel
archive at marc.info, and see there's a couple of "large swap areas"
threads from February and March 1998 which show where that header
comes from, and the sparc case is mentioned there; but I've not
gone through and digested it all.
