Fire Works Prohibited on Forest Service Lands

Anchorage, AK (June 29, 2018) – The fourth of July is right around the corner and the Chugach National Forest will be a popular destination for recreational enthusiasts. The Chugach National Forest reminds visitors that fireworks are always illegal on all Forest Service lands.

A temporary fire prohibition has been issued on building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, including charcoal, within the Exit Glacier area will be in effect from June 29, 2018through midnight July 8, 2018. This prohibition applies to Forest Service lands accessed off of Exit Glacier Road.

The Forest Service is stressing fire prevention to ensure everyone has a safe and pleasant outdoor experience. Visitors can do their part to prevent wildfires by keeping control of their campfires, making sure the coals are cool to the touch before leaving, putting out any cigarettes in ashtrays, checking for fire restrictions, and not shooting off fireworks in the Chugach National Forest. Always practice campfire safety and keep wildfire prevention in mind, regardless of weather conditions.

There are monetary penalties for fireworks possession on the national forest. Violators may be subject to a citation and fine, with a maximum penalty of $5,000 or six months in jail. Anyone who starts a wildfire can be held liable for suppression costs.

For forest orders and updates on current Fire Danger level and fire restrictions visit the Chugach National Forest Website.
