Prescribed burn Wednesday to Friday on Coconino NF

CLINT WELLS, Ariz., April 2, 2018, For Immediate Release — Fire managers in the Mogollon Rim Ranger District are planning a prescribed burn starting Wednesday (April 4) to reintroduce fire into the Ponderosa pine ecosystem near Buck Mountain and the burn will reduce forest fuel accumulation in strategic areas around northern Arizona communities.

The public and media can get quick notification of when a prescribed burn or any other activity is happening on the Coconino National Forest by following us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/CoconinoNF. When ignition of a prescribed burn begins we update our Twitter account so the public can know why smoke is in the air and where it is coming from.

The project is planned for 9 a.m. Wednesday through the rest of the week, but are also dependent upon weather and wind conditions, so all or some of them could be cancelled if conditions are not suitable.

 

UPPER BEAVER CREEK (Buck Mountain area)

When: Planned ignition will be Wednesday through Friday (April 3 through 6) as weather and conditions allow.
Where: Immediately west of Buck Mountain Lookout
Size: Up to 1,000 acres per day.
Impacts: Smoke may impact Lake Mary Road south of Long Valley and communities to the north. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle and drain down nearby canyons, potentially impacting the Village of Oak Creek.

 

The project is scheduled after 9 a.m. each day starting Wednesday Through Friday (April 4-6).

Smoke from either, or both, burns is predicted to move toward the east and northeast which may impact the local communities and motorists on Lake Mary Road. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle in the lower level drainages and canyons.

Prescribed burns are always dependent upon meeting the prescription, goals, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) approval and weather conditions. If any of these factors are not suitable it could cause any burn project to be canceled. The public can view approved prescribed burns on ADEQ’s website at smoke.azdeq.gov. Burns on the Coconino National Forest begins with the forest’s designator “COF.”
