Prescribed burn today

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., April 3, 2018, For Immediate Release — The Howard Burn Project is scheduled to begin this morning approximately 1 mile southeast of Mountainaire (35° 4'44.49"N, 111°38'13.72"W) and is comprised of 875 acres that will produce visible smoke in the Flagstaff area.

Within this broadcast burn area there are also slash piles which will burn and may smoke for several days within the prescription area. Fire managers are planning to use Forest Roads, 9484T, 235F, 9420R, 762B and local topography as area boundaries.

The project is scheduled to begin sometime after 9 a.m. and should be completed within three days.

Smoke is predicted to move toward the east and northeast which may impact local communities such as east Flagstaff and motorists on Lake Mary Road. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle in the Lake Mary area, Doney Park, Walnut Canyon and drain down nearby canyons.

Notifications of upcoming prescribed burns are provided regularly by news releases throughout the season, and more information about activities, incidents, and wildfires can be found online:
