Prescribed burns planned for next week
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., March 29, 2018, For Immediate Release —Coconino National Forest fire
managers plan to burn excess fuels near Mountainaire and Lake Mary during next week as weather allows.
The Howard Burn Project encompasses approximately 800 acres and is located just southeast of Mountainaire (35°04'31.6"N,
111°39'35.0"W). Within this broadcast burn area there are also slash piles which will burn and may smoke for several days within the
prescription area. Fire managers are planning to use Forest Roads 235, 235A, 235J and local topography as area boundaries.
The project is scheduled after 9 a.m. on Tuesday or Wednesday (April 3-4) and should be completed the same day.
If all of the prescription criteria is correct to burn the Lake Mary Burn Project, it encompasses up to 1,200 acres and is located approximately
one mile south of Lower Lake Mary (35°04'14.4"N,
111°32'11.0"W). This broadcast burn area and large fuel sources may smoke for several days within the prescription area. Fire managers
are planning to use Forest Roads 296, 296A and local topography as area boundaries.
The project is scheduled after 9 a.m. on Thursday or Friday (April 5-6) and should be completed the same day.
Smoke from either, or both, burns is predicted to move toward the
east and northeast which may impact local communities such as East Flagstaff and motorists on Lake Mary Road.
Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle in the Lake Mary area, Doney Park, Walnut Canyon and drain down nearby canyons.
Prescribed burns are always
dependent upon meeting the prescription, goals, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) approval and weather conditions. If any of these factors are not suitable
it could cause any burn project to be canceled.
The public can view approved prescribed burns on ADEQ’s website at smoke.azdeq.gov.
Burns on the Coconino National Forest begins with the forest’s designator “COF.”
