The Seventh Annual Yakutat Tern Festival

YAKUTAT, Alaska, April 24, 2017–The Seventh Annual Yakutat Tern Festival, a celebration of the natural and cultural resources of the area, is June 1–4, 2017. Yakutat hosts one of the largest and southernmost known nesting colonies of Aleutian Terns, as well as Arctic Terns. Up to 200 other bird species nest in or migrate through the area as well. The festival is family-friendly and offers activities for birders and non-birders; including field trips, seminars, kids’ activities, evening banquets, a bird banding demonstration, live music, and more.

The keynote speaker is Julia K. Parrish, University of Washington Professor of Ocean Fishery Sciences and the Associate Dean of the College of the Environment. Her presentation will focus on the recent seabird die-offs in the North Pacific and the role of citizen science in assessing the impacts of a changing climate. Julia is also the executive director of the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST), the largest beached bird program in the world. She has been honored as a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Year of the Oceans Environmental Hero, and has received a Champions of Change award at the White House for her leadership in coastal citizen science.

The featured artist for the festival is Juneau-based violinist Linda Rosenthal, who will be performing solo, and partnering with Los Angeles-based actor Bill Blush in Strings & Stories children’s programs. Linda has performed throughout North America, Europe, and Asia in recitals, as a soloist with orchestras, and as a chamber musician. Strings & Stories is a dynamic pairing of music and theater for audiences of all ages, which she created and premiered for the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
