Fourth meeting set for proposed improvements at Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area

JUNEAU, Alaska, April 24, 2017–The U.S. Forest Service invites everyone interested in the future of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area (MGRA) to participate in the fourth meeting of the facility improvement project, previously known as Charrettes, which is intended to share the latest developments and engage attendees in deciding the project’s next steps. The meeting will take place on April 26, at 5:00 p.m. in the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.

"Our last meeting was held in November, where we received input on the inventory mapping for the MGRA, and introduced the process to the public in the form of a group planning exercise,” said Eric Ouderkirk, a landscape architect for the Forest Service. “This next meeting is a reporting session where we will be sharing what has been developed to date with the public and discussing what’s next.”

Corvus Design has been working on the Draft Conceptual Design Plan, combining public input with planning techniques to provide recommendations for facility improvements at the recreation area.

“We have not yet made final recommendations but felt it was time to let the public know what’s been developed so far,” said Christopher Mertl, landscape architect with Corvus Design. “We expect the Draft Conceptual Development Plan for the MGRA to be completed in late summer, once we get the opportunity to receive input from stakeholders who have not yet been part of the process.”

The meeting will be broadcast live via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/MendenhallGlacierVC/ for those who cannot physically attend the meeting. Visitor center elevators are being replaced and are not operational. Access is via stairs or outdoor ramp.
