Celebrating Spring at the Stikine River Birding Festival

WRANGELL, Alaska, April 7, 2017 – The Stikine River Birding Festival celebrates the spring arrival of migratory birds, including hundreds of thousands of shorebirds to the Stikine River Delta. The 20th year of this Wrangell festival takes place April 27-30, 2017.

This year’s schedule is now available online at www.stikinebirding.org. Highlights include family activities, photo and art competitions, birding excursions, bird banding demonstrations, and guest speakers.

Presenters this year include Dan Ruthrauff from the USGS Alaska Science Center, who will share his research on the hardy rock sandpipers that overwinter in Alaska. “Guide to the Birds of Alaska” author Bob Armstrong will also present his nature videos and share techniques for documenting bird behavior without disturbing them.

The festival was just awarded a 2017 Mindful Birding Award for efforts to promote ethical birding guidelines and bird conservation.

The festival is sponsored by the Tongass National Forest, the City and Borough of Wrangell, the Wrangell Convention and Visitors Bureau, the James and Elsie Nolan Center, and many local Wrangell organizations and businesses. For more information about the Stikine River Birding Festival, contact Corree Delabrue, Wrangell Ranger District interpreter, at 907-874-7550 or the Wrangell Visitor Center at 907-874-2829.
