Discovery Center welcomes Coast Guard, Ketchikan communities with free, special opening

KETCHIKAN, Alaska, April 7, 2017 – The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center is pleased to announce, in celebration of the commissioning of the Coast Guard Cutter John F. McCormick, the center will be open to the public, free of charge, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 11, 2017.

Visitors are invited to explore the center’s four exhibit halls and discover Southeast Alaska’s unique coastal rainforests, vibrant native cultures, diverse ecosystems and the ways people make a sustainable living in the Tongass National Forest. In the center’s changing exhibit gallery is the annual Alaska Hummingbird Festival Juried Art Show, featuring Alaskan artists’ creative depictions of an amazing array of migratory birds. A rotating selection of films on Southeast Alaska and Ketchikan’s nature and culture will be shown in the Elizabeth Peratrovich Theater. Rangers will present hourly interpretive programs and answer questions about the Tongass.

“We are thrilled to welcome the USCGC John F. McCormick and the Coast Guard community to Ketchikan and the Tongass National Forest,” center director Leslie Swada said. “Exploring the Discovery Center is a great way for newcomers and local residents alike to connect with the stories behind Southeast Alaska’s wild places and vibrant cultures.”

America the Beautiful public lands passes will be available for purchase or issue: the $80 Annual Pass, the $10 lifetime Senior Pass for U.S. citizens 62 years of age and older and the free Every Kid in a Park annual pass for 4th-grade students. Of particular interest to Coast Guard families is the Annual Military Pass, which is issued free of charge to members of the Armed Forces and their dependents. The above passes are valid for admission to national parks, forests and public lands nationwide. In addition, the special $15 SEADC Season Pass will be available, which provides unlimited admission to the Discovery Center for the holder and two guests throughout the summer of 2017.

The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center is the Tongass National Forest’s interagency visitor center and museum, located at 50 Main Street in the heart of downtown Ketchikan. Working together to interpret the story of the Tongass National Forest, we foster public appreciation for Southeast Alaska’s unique relationship between land and people, while advancing public understanding of the Forest Service’s role in sustaining healthy ecosystems and vibrant communities throughout Southeast Alaska.
