Juneau Icefield. It was started in 1948 by the late Dr. Maynard Miller. The research program’s Executive Director Erin Whitney and Program Coordinator Mary Gianotti will present a history of the educational program, discuss recent developments, and outline the future direction of the annual, eight-week student
expedition that traverses the icefield from Juneau to Atlin, British Columbia, Canada. “Student participants partner with leading scientists and engage in research in glaciology, climatology and biology,” said Dr. Whitney. “The science curriculum is augmented by presentations by professional photographers, film makers and
doctors specializing in wilderness medicine.” JIRP’s increased levels of academic and scientific rigor has resulted in six project abstracts being submitted to the Fall 2016 American Geophysical Union’s conference, which attracted 24,000 participants. During summer 2016, JIRP’s 32 students, ranging in education level from graduate and undergraduate to junior and senior high school students, came from the United States, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, South Korea, Bermuda and Switzerland.
