Exploring the End: Discovery Center hosts film, discussion on caring for terminally ill January 27

KETCHIKAN, Alaska, Jan 25, 2016 – Join hospice expert Tyler Pitts at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center this Friday at 6 p.m. to discuss the challenge of end-of-life care. As part of the center’s Friday Night Insights series, Pitts, the Volunteer Hospice Coordinator at PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, will host a screening of the Frontline documentary “Being Mortal,” which explores how patients, families and doctors deal with the experience of serious or terminal illnesses. After the film, Pitts, KMC Medical Director Pete Rice, and other medical and bioethics experts will be on hand to answer questions and cultivate a conversation about what Pitts said is the importance of “taking control” of one’s own health care decisions in difficult circumstances.

“‘Being Mortal’ builds a bridge between people who face terminal illness and the doctors who care for them,” Pitts said. “The film illustrates the value of a patient’s personal choice, decision-making, and understanding among the patient, their family and their doctors.”

The screening is presented as a partnership with Courageous Conversations, which is a part of Ketchikan Volunteer Hospice, an organization focused on the importance of planning for end-of-life care. Information will be available about the hospice’s monthly workshops, and two Continuing Educational Units are available for eligible medical personnel.

The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center and exhibit halls are open Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. this winter. Admission is free. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the exhibits, purchase maps, and America the Beautiful passes, and learn about the forest from an interpretive ranger. A variety of films exploring the natural and cultural history of Alaska will be played in the theater upon request until 5 p.m. The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center is located at 50 Main Street in Ketchikan.
