Trail Improvements made through cooperative agreement WRANGELL, Alaska, June 17, 2016–The Tongass National Forest has the goal of accomplishing more work with partners as one strategy to continue recreation work in the face of
declining budgets. One example of a successful partnership is the work between the Wrangell Cooperative Association (WCA) Transportation and the Forest Service to make improvements on several popular Wrangell Island trails. The collaborative partnership started
June 2013. In this partnership, WCA provides the labor and skills to repair the trails, and the Forest Service provides materials and tools for the work. Completed projects include re-graveling the first segment of Rainbow Falls Trail and making improvements
to the Nemo Saltwater Access Trail. The Nemo Saltwater Access trailhead was relocated and an additional segment of trail added in order to enlarge and move the parking area from a precipitous drop-off.
WCA will continue trail work after August 1, 2016. They will resume work on the Thoms Lake Trail, repairing areas where the gravel has washed out of the trail.
This cooperative effort with WCA and the Forest Service provides improved access and better trails on National Forest Lands. The Wrangell Ranger District would like to thank
the WCA for all the help and hard work that went into making these trails better for the recreating public. For more information, contact the Wrangell Ranger District at 907-874-2323.
