Forest Service releases Wrangell Island Project Draft Environmental Impact Statement for public comment Wrangell, Alaska. June 14, 2016 – The Forest Service has released
the Wrangell Island Project Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for public comment. The Wrangell Island Project proposes timber harvest and associated road construction on Wrangell Island. The DEIS presents five alternatives including the no action
alternative and four action alternatives; each of which propose differing timber harvest locations, volumes, harvest methods and road construction. Each alternative also proposes different road access management for public motorized use upon completion of
the harvest. The project is now in the public comment period which closes on July 18, 2016. The Forest Service is hosting an open house public meeting to present the DEIS and to facilitate
public comment. A portion of this meeting will include a formal subsistence hearing. The meeting will be held at the Wrangell Ranger District Office, 525 Bennett Street in Wrangell on Monday June 27, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., or longer if necessary. The
subsistence hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m. The DEIS is available for review online at
http://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=34831. Copies are also available
in paper or DVD at the Wrangell Ranger District and the Forest Supervisor’s Office in Ketchikan. The public can comment on the DEIS by e-mail to
