Attention Hunters:
Weapon Discharge Prohibited in Russian River Developed Recreation Site
Cooper Landing-
The Chugach National Forest would like to remind hunters that a Weapons Discharge Restriction Forest Order is in effect for the Russian River area to protect public health and safety.
The order prohibits the discharge of a weapon, except in cases that involve defense of life or property.
“As of 09/04/15, one bear was confirmed killed in this location
and the hunter has been cited for violating this restriction. The goal is to minimize public safety concerns in this area especially while we wind down our season
with the rainbow trout and coho salmon fishing that is still occurring,” said Bobbie Jo Skibo, Interagency Management Coordinator for the Chugach National Forest. “Weapons
should only be discharged in legal situations such as in defense of life or property.” The order also complements
additional interagency regulations that apply to this multi-jurisdictional area regarding the use of weapons and hunting. Those include: Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: Firearm discharge
restricted within 1/4 mile of designated public campgrounds, trailheads, waysides, buildings, or the Sterling Highway from the east Kenai National Wildlife Refuge boundary to the east junction of the Skilak Loop Road.
