Weapon Discharge Prohibited in Russian River
Developed Recreation Site
Cooper Landing-
The Chugach National Forest has issued an expanded Weapons Discharge Restriction Forest Order for the Russian River area to protect public health and safety.
The order prohibits the discharge of a weapon, except in cases that involve defense of life or property. This order tiers to an existing weapons restriction
that has been in effect which applies broadly to all developed recreation sites on National Forest Systems lands.
“With close to 150,000 annual visitors seeking recreational opportunities, our goal is to minimize public safety concerns in this area and to clarify
expectations. As an example, people should not use a firearm as a noise deterrent to bears or hunt in this area due to the high public visitation,” said Bobbie Jo Skibo, Interagency Management Coordinator for the Chugach National Forest. “Weapons
should only be discharged in legal situations such as in defense of life or property.”
The order also complements
additional interagency regulations that apply to this multi-jurisdictional area regarding the use of weapons and hunting. Those include: Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: Firearm discharge
restricted within 1/4 mile of designated public campgrounds, trailheads, waysides, buildings, or the Sterling Highway from the east Kenai National Wildlife Refuge boundary to the east junction of the Skilak Loop Road.
Alaska Department of Fish and Game: Russian River Closed Area: Consisting of the area within 150 yards, and including the river, from the outlet of Lower Russian
Lake downstream to the Russian River/Kenai River confluence is closed to hunting in June and July.
